Romani Home Video A documentary by Micah Magee. 9 min. Czech Republic. 2000. (Original format Hi8) On the other side of the highway, which the Czech community in Most will never cross, the Roma children of Chanov play in burned out panalaks. In the overcrowded apartments there is no hot water, no telephone. The only connection to the outside world is the one way window of the television. And me, the English teacher from Texas. What is your favorite film? Rocky. Favorite costume? A blond wig. What do you want to be when you grow up? A singer. Gypsy music? No way. This documentary examines the cultural self-determination of a new generation of Czech-Roma musicians. Micah Magee was born in Kansas in 1978. Studied Television-Film Production and Arts at the University of Texas at Austin and at FAMU/Charles University Prague. She teached video production at Chanov Romani Elementary Most in the Czech Republic and in the Film Dept Univ of Texas at Austin, Texas. She has worked as dancer, journalsit, film festival programmer and is contributor of starship magazine. From 1999-2002 she worked as Coordinator, Managing Director and Programming Director at the Cinematexas International Short Film Festival Austin, Texas. She is co-founder of Austin Bike-In Theater Films since 1999. |
