"New Homes in Israel and the Occupied Territories"
a a series of photographs by Efrat Shvily, 1992-98

New Homes in Israel and the Occupied Territories (1992-98) is a series of small black-and-white photographs of anonymous deserted buildings, apartment complexes and neighborhoods in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The work arose in reaction to Israel's massive increase in construction of new settlements in the early 1990ies.

Seeming more like models than real buildings it remains unclear whether the buildings were once inhabited and are now deserted, are currently inhabited or soon to be occupied. Deserted of any human presence they are abstract constructions in no-mans-land, removed from their environment and context.
The project addresses architecture as an executive arm of an ideological program that aspires to give the country a new identity.
